Peak District pedalling in perfect weather

After some discussion over several weeks, four of us set off from home in Wirksworth , Derbyshire and had fabulous views, some tough climbs but wonderful descents as we pedalled through Elton to lunch in Youlgreave (or should that be Youlgrave? – the village signs don’t agree!).

Long Rake after lunch is a bit of an uphill slog but the descent into Crowdecote is stunning as we got early views of the upper valley of the River Dove (or is that Crowdicote-? another disputed spelling) .

The bridleway along the Dove was a joy to ride and it was only the section near to the site of Pilsbury Castle where we needed to push up a steep section just before we hit the tarmac again. The gated road from Pilsbury towards Hartington is virtually traffic-free but it does have a little lead mine entrance.

Our overnight was made very comfortable by Jane Pilkington who offers the best in traditional farm house bed and breakfasts and in a solid stone house that gave us sound sleep and deep dreams – solid stone houses always enhance my dreams!

BACK IN THE SADDLE

Hartington has a famous cheese shop and Day 2 just had to start with purchase of locally made Stilton.

The Maniford Trail along the route of the short-lived narrow gauge railway was enchanting in the morning June sun. We followed the Rivers Manifold and Hamps but both were almost water-free as they have sink holes.

There was a long climb after we left the trail but that long scenic descent though the little-known valley past Throwley Hall is the stuff of long memories.

Sipping National Trust soup at Ilam is even better with a slightly misty view of the chisel-top hill of Thorpe Cloud.

By far the toughest climb of the two days was up to the village of Thorpe but there is somehow the ‘home run’ summons up extra energy

The whole idea had been born over a tea-stop at Carsington Reservoir a few weeks back so we dropped in for a closing cuppa before drifting down to return to Wirksworth – entering through the ancient alley of Bowling Green Lane.

Al, Katie, Andy, Suzanne.
Great company and let’s not forget the important role played by Vally who met up with our luggage
